“Genuine joy is a way of life and not a temporary emotion…”, says His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, one of the most luminous and charismatic personalities in the world these days, as he invites us to talk about happiness in his only lecture entitled “The Art of Happiness” here in Vilnius.

The timing of the Tibet spiritual leader’s fourth visit at the beginning of this summer is not a coincidence and has a very special purpose. His Holiness is coming to congratulate Lithuania and its people on the occasion of the centenary of an independent Lithuania. The Dalai Lama has always been there during decisive moments to show support and encouragement.

Close ties between Tibet’s spiritual leader and Lithuania go back to 1990. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was the first politician/spiritual leader to congratulate Lithuania on its independence. He sent a telegram with his congratulations on 3 April, 1990 and a year later congratulated Lithuania by delivering a speech at the Parliament.

Since 1960’s Tibet’s spiritual leader has been travelling in the West, where he gives lectures on matters of philosophy, religion, culture and politics to audiences numbering in the thousands.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has been honoured with numerous awards and honorary degrees for his works on Buddhist philosophy, the encouragement of interreligious dialogue, the promotion of peaceful resolution of conflicts, the protection of human rights and attention to environmental protection. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his continuous opposition to the use of violence in the struggle for the liberation of Tibet and his philosophy of peace, which rests on great reverence for all things living and for the concept of universal responsibility embracing all mankind, as well as nature.

The Dalai Lama travels around the world to further promote the concept of kindness and peace. He visited Lithuanian in 1991, 2001 and 2013. He became an honorary citizen of the Republic of Užupis, a district of Vilnius, during his second visit in 2001.

“The Art of Happiness” will be delivered English with simultaneous interpretation provided in Lithuanian and Russian. Those who need simultaneous interpretation should bring their headphones with them. All proceeds from the sale of the tickets will be used to cover the costs of the visit.
