In the music world, to have a famous parent is both a gift and a challenge. In particular, if you wish to pursue a career as a musician. On the one hand, parents’ works open up the doors, provide invaluable experience and contacts. On the other hand, history shows many examples of the children of talented musicians who are unable to follow successfully in their parents’ footsteps. But children can also make their parents proud.

The Vilnius Mama Jazz festival has on several occasions featured the offspring of famous musicians who has been successful in developing his own career. For example, in 2012 we saw the performance of the saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the son of the legendary musicians John and Alice Coltrane. Two years ago the audience of Vilnius Mama Jazz had an opportunity to enjoy China Moses, a popular singer and a television presenter, whose mother, US jazz star Dee Dee Bridgewater, appeared at the festival in 2005. Both stage appearances proved that the talent and passion for music may be inherited.

This year, the final headliner for the festival is vocalist, songwriter Deva Mahal, who is the daughter of another music legend. It is even sometimes said that she was born with the blues in her blood. This comes as no surprise as her father is singer and guitarist Taj Mahal, the US blues superstar who won his third Grammy Award this year.

Music has been in Deva Mahal’s life since childhood. Still at school she recorded several children’s songs together with her dad. Later she cooperated with a number of groups of a variety of musical genres, including the US alternative rock stars TV On The Radio, and while living in New Zealand played with one of the most interesting groups in this country Fat Freddy's Drop.

A decade ago she lent her voice in her father’s album Maestro which won Taj Mahal the Grammy nomination. It was just a matter of time before this talented female musician would start her solo career.

And this is already happening in an impressive way. Just a year ago, Deva recorded the first mini album of her songs. In spring this year she released her debut album Run Deep in a duet with the famous US singer Allen Stone. When in the first half of the year she appeared in the US festival SXSW, the mecca for art, the website of the Grammy awards called her a new talent stepping into the spotlight.

Invitations to major blues festivals in the US, Germany and Australia ensued. Last year she took to stage of the famous New York Carnegie Hall participating in the annual salute show of the famous producer Michael Dorf in commemoration of the soul legend Aretha Franklin. This year she was again part of the all-star line-up to honour the music of rock legends Led Zeppelin.

This summarises the Deva’s phenomenon as a genre-defying artist. Her creative work is a modern mix of blues, soul, rock, pop and R&B. Her songs about love and loss are performed with such emotion and passion that it does not take the audience long to connect with the singer. If you have been to one of Deva’s concerts, you will undoubtedly want to hear her again.

Elton John, a singer who does not pay compliments undeservedly, has included one of Deva’s pieces in the playlist of his radio show, and described it with one word: ‘wonderful’.

The singer who will perform in Lithuania for the first time has shared a stage with Etta James, Dianne Reeves, Mace Parker, Cyndi Lauper, The Roots and other jazz, blues, pop, and hip hop heavyweights.

The singer sites Nina Simone and Tracy Chapman as some of her influences while her vocal style has been compared to that of Amy Winehouse, a pop start who left us too soon.

Despite the comparisons, Deva has charmed music fans who believe that this powerful and talented vocalist is on her own individual path with a modern edge.

‘Deva and crew will make you dance, they will make you cry, and they will also make you realize that you will never be as talented as they are,’ the internet blog Gawker wrote.

The rapidly rising star will perform her music with finely hewn emotions and energy. There is no doubt that this show deserves to be the closing show of this year’s Vilnius Mama Jazz.

MATHIAS EICK QUINTET (Norway)

A year ago the memorable Norwegian group Jaga Jazzist played on the Vilnius Mama Jazz scene. This year, one former long-time member of the group and one of the most outstanding Norwegian jazz musicians, Mathias Eick, will take to the stage.

The musician who will celebrate his 40th birthday next year, has already accumulated many accolades despite his young age. This year saw the release of his fourth album as a leader, Ravensburg, on the legendary ECM Records label, the same label as his three previous albums. He has, however, played as a sideman in nearly a hundred recordings from jazz to pop music and alternative rock.

While he is a multi-instrumentalist, you usually see him play the trumpet, and this will also be the case in Lithuania. He has also played vibes, double-bass, guitar and the piano in various projects.

Eick completed his jazz studies in Trondheim and his talent was spotted early. As a member of the city’s jazz orchestra, he had an opportunity to share the stage with Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and other jazz celebrities.

In 1998, he joined Jaga Jazzist, which played a mix of jazz, post-rock, and electronic music and as its member until 2014 recorded five of the group’s albums.

In the previous decade Mathias recorded albums with Manu Katche, Jacob Young, Lars Danielsson and other international jazz stars, has toured with the renowned US guitarist Mike Stern.

His musical experiments were not limited to jazz music. For example, he lent his instrument in a few albums of the psychedelic rock project Motorpsycho, played with one of the most scandalous Norwegian rock bands Turbonegro, rock group DumDum Boys and the famous singer Thomas Dybdahl, and the Dutch progressive rock star The Gathering.

Eick started his solo career a decade ago, after he was awarded the International Jazz Award for New Talent by the International Jazz Festival Organisation in 2007.

The musician earned more awards in Norway, for example, in 2009, he was awarded the Statoil scholarship, considered to be one of the most important and largest in Norway and in 2014 he was awarded the main prize of the Kongsberg Jazz Festival established by DNB bank.

In 2008, his first solo album The Door appeared and was well received by the critics. Released under the ECM Records label the album combines musical subtlety, sensitive tones of the Scandinavian jazz and virtuosity.

His latest album, Ravensburg, like the previous three, was produced by the founder of ECM Records, Manfred Eicher. Mathias says that he feels he has finally found his musical vision in this album, which took him through some dark periods en route.

The music of Ravensburg, which the trumpet player will present in Vilnius, is full of personal experiences and intimate reflections. As the musician says, feelings are outpoured with each breath and the name of the album has connections with his family.

Ravensburg is a city in Germany which in 1883 saw the opening of the largest puzzle producer in Europe. Ravensburg is the town of his grandmother and while creating this album the musician remembered the puzzle games played under his grandmother’s Christmas Tree. A week before the concert in Vilnius Mathias made a sensitive symbolic gesture of performing in Ravensburg.

The title of the album was inspired by childhood memories and the music – by reflections that life is like a puzzle of a thousand pieces, which after long trips across the world and wanderings, he finally managed to put together without making mistakes. The inspirations for the new album, as the song titles indicates, are family, children, parents and friends.

‘Children never cease to amaze me. I wanted to portray strong emotions in life without words,’ Eick said.

While we are on the subject of family, family and music are inseparable parts of Eick’s life. His brother Johannes and his sister Trude are also jazz musicians. Eick, however, will come to Lithuania with his stage family, a group of musicians, most of whom played on his new album.

You will hear music from the Nordic regions associated with fjords, reflections in the darkness and dreams. Get ready to be lightly hypnotised – you will surely have no wish to check your mobile phone during this concert.

The organisers of the festival reserve the right to change the programme.
