13–17 November, Vilnius Mama Jazz international festival will take place at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius (Vokiečių g. 2).

Vladimiras Čekasinas – saxes

Vytautas Labutis – saxes, p, synth

Arvydas Joffė – dr

We can hardly imagine the 20th Vilnius Mama Jazz without the most prominent jazz musicians of our country who have become household names of the festival. One of them is the tireless creator of the most unexpected soundscapes and the true country’s jazz flagship – Vladimiras Čekasinas. On 24 September, he will perform together with his long-time stage collaborators Vytautas Labutis and Arvydas Joffe. The trio will present a special programme called Sonata B.

“It will be a free fantasy based on the motives of Piano Sonata by American composer Samuel Barber. It will feature not only the music performed by the trio, but also musical excerpts performed by the chamber orchestra specially for this programme,” Čekasinas explained and added: “Joffė will play both electronic and acoustic drums, but these instruments will not perform the traditional rhythm function. The focus will be on the melody. The same can be expected from Labutis, who will play saxophone and electronic instruments.”

There is much to be said about Čekasinas. We could start from the period of Ganelin Trio, examine his solo career, admire his playing technique and marvel all ideas born in the head of this musician and transformed into sounds. But these would just be attempts to rephrase all-too-familiar things from his bio. It is therefore best to experience the magic of his unique sound universe.

Čekasinas is not only a saxophonist or a wind virtuoso, bus also an experimenter, a creator who offers amazing sound collages. We can hear extremely dynamic and powerful saxophone passages, piano cord progressions, shamanic vocal games and many other tricks he invented. Čekasinas is also noted for his collaborations in films and theatre. He engages various forms of art in his creative work.

Vytautas Labutis is one of the students of Čekasinas. Labutis started his career as an accordion player, but subsequently turned to wind instruments. Labutis is a leader and a participant of many collectives, an educator who made his debut on the Lithuanian jazz scene in 1982 along with Petras Vyšniauskas Quartet and still remains one of its members. Although many know Labutis as a saxophonist, he plays not only a variety of wind instruments, but also incorporates piano, percussion or experiments with synthesizers.

Arvydas Joffė, the second stage companion of Čekasinas in this project, is famous for his expressive and distinctive drum and percussion sound. Music critics and fans alike admire his subtle and balanced mix of acoustic and electronic drumming style filled with exclusive energy. Joffė, originally from Kaunas, learned drumming for several years independently and then made his debut in the first Lithuanian rock bands. In the 1970s he became interested in jazz and decided to pursue formal education in music. During his career, the musician has played in many jazz and other style combos in Lithuania and abroad.

Vilnius Mama Jazz will provide a unique opportunity to see these prominent Lithuanian jazzmen together.
